"Go home and don’t come back until the government’s back in business."

Such were the words all of us full-time military technicians and federal employees heard last week when Congress failed to pass a budget. And, as of this writing, there’s still no budget and there’s still no money coming into our checking account.

When will this end?

I don’t know. But, I do know our nation’s leadership is definitely out-of-touch with the average American’s needs; yet, they continue to act like some dysfunctional family … arguing over who’s right and who’s wrong … while our country continues to further unravel from within.

For a number of years this downward spiral has been taking place and seems to be escalating in recent months. Our economy’s in a shambles because of misplaced priorities and overspending. Our military’s being decimated from within by budget cuts, downsizing, the phasing out of legacy aircraft, changes in strategy, etc.

And, it goes without saying that we are truly a "nation divided" — for Congress is more concerned about voting on party lines than they are doing what’s right/best for America.

Am I some radical, right-wing, fundamentalist Republican? No. But, I am a God-fearing, Bible-believing, America-loving citizen-soldier who’s fed up with political correctness and lauding of views-and-values that are leading us on a downward road to destruction.

Believing that the aborting of innocent, helpless babies is wrong shouldn’t cause others to hate me. Believing that homosexuality is a sin, even as lying, cheating, stealing, etc., (Romans 1:29-32) are shouldn’t put me on someone’s "hate crimes" list.

Speaking out about the ills of our society or writing columns like this shouldn’t raise red flags or make others think I’m being subversive or a possible terrorist.

But, we all know they do.

And, that’s why I say there is an ever-growing, deepening spiritual darkness in our land. And, dear Reader, it’s only going to worsen in the coming days.

Why is that?

Simply because the Bible predicts it will.

When Jesus likened the days preceding His Return to those in Noah’s Day (Matthew 24:37-39), He foresaw what would be happening in our world today. Genesis 6:5 says "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."

Sounds like a headline from this morning’s headlines, doesn’t it?

When you add in others passages like II Timothy 3:1-7, 13; 4:3-4 and II Peter 2:10-3:7, it’s clear we’re living in the last days. Thus, we shouldn’t be surprised at what’s happening around us.

However, this doesn’t mean we should adopt a "Que sere, sere, whatever will be will be" attitude. That’s just fatalism and a victim’s mentality of passive resignation.

Much better is a sounding of the alarm like someone who sees a party barge full of people floating down the river toward a waterfall around the bend. They’ve never been on that river before and are partying hardy as they soak up a few rays and cold brew.

You cry "Go back, go back!" but they just wave and say "Hey, come join us!," oblivious to the fact that soon there’ll be "wailing and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 8:12; 13:42).

Talk about being grief-stricken! That’s how I feel about our nation right now in this gathering darkness and false calm before the Storm. Even so, I’ll continue to woo and warn … plead and point … hoping that others will hear and heed before it’s too late. Here’s hoping you’ll join me. At least that way you’ll know you’ve done all you can to resist the darkness as one of God’s "watchmen on the wall" (Ezekiel 33:1-33) so you’ll have no regrets when His Judgment comes.
