At about 4:15 p.m. Friday, volunteer firefighters from Lonoke and South Bend were called out to fight fires along about two miles of Arkansas Highway 89 and Gentry Road between Lonoke and Furlow. The grass fires on the open shoulders were quickly extinguished, but the flames in a wooded area on Gentry Road took longer for firefighters to reach. An official report has not been made yet, however, the number of fires and the spread of the blaze contrary to wind direction led some firefighters to suspect arson. According to information from the count judge’s office, there were no other grass fires reported over the weekend. Lonoke County Red Cross representative Rita Schmitz said the organization also responded to the fire to support firefighters. (Photo by Ed Galucki)
