The Carlisle Lady Bison held off the Augusta Lady Red Devils for a 39-37 win in the season opener Monday at Augusta.

This is the only scheduled meeting between the two teams after playing in the same conference for more than 10 years.

Carlisle led 9-4 after one quarter but only 17-15 at halftime. Augusta made a charge to tie the game at 26-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Faith Walker led Carlisle with 18 points. Callie Hillman had eight. Maddie Harrison had seven. Breanna Young had four. Hannah Cooper had two.

Second-year coach Jonathan Buffalo was proud of his team for getting the season-opening victory.

"It’s always good to get one on the road, especially the first one," Buffalo said. "We played hard."

Buffalo said he saw some things his team will work on in practice.

"Overall, I was pleased with the effort," he said. "It is always tough to go into Augusta and get a win. Any time you can go over there and walk out with a ‘w,’ it’s a good thing."

Carlisle will host the two-time defending Class 2A state champion England on Tuesday at Bison Arena. The Lady Lions are a much different team with the graduation of the Watkins twins — Jameka and Janeka.

"They will bring a young, athletic ball club over here," Buffalo said. "We’ve got to get ready for them. We’ll do a lot of the same type things we did against Augusta. We’ve got to do a little better job of handling the pressure this time around."
