The Carlisle Lady Bison rallied from an 18-11 second quarter deficit to beat England 51-45 on Tuesday night at Bison Arena. The Lady Lions are the two-time defending Class 2A state champions.
"That was a very talented group that we played tonight," Carlisle coach Jonathan Buffalo said. "They are young but they will be a force to be reckoned with as they get older.
"It was a big win for our program."
Buffalo, whose team is 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season, said he thought his team played better than it did in the season-opening win over Augusta last week.
"We didn’t turn the ball over as much," he said. "It was a good win for us."
Carlisle led 11-10 after one quarter before England scored the first eight points of the second quarter, including five by Julia Bryant, to lead 18-11.
Carlisle responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 18-18. Faith Walker started the run with a short jumper then Breanna Young scored five in a row.
England took a 20-18 lead before Carlisle scored the final four points of the half — all by Young — to lead 22-20 at halftime.
England kept it close until the Lady Bison went on a 13-4 run to end the third quarter and lead 39-29. Maddie Harrison hit a 3-pointer to cap the run.
Bryant scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to cut Carlisle’s lead to 39-33.
The closest England got the rest of the way was five points at 46-41 and 48-43. Both times, Carlisle hit two free throws to push the lead back to seven points — Young and Callie Hillman each hit two free throws during that stretch.
"We faced a little bit of adversity and stood up to it," Buffalo said. "That showed character on my girls’ part. They were able to withstand the run that they made and push it back up and take care of the basketball. And we were able to hold it until the game was over."
Young led Carlisle with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Walker had eight points and six rebounds. Sloane Henderson had eight points and five rebounds. Hannah Cooper had six points and four rebounds. Hillman had four points and seven rebounds. Presley Carter and Harrison had three points each.
Bryant led England with 23 points.
