The Carlisle Bison baseball team opened the 2013 season with an 11-1 win over the England Lions at Rockefeller Park on Monday.

The Bison got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first. Josh Mathis led off with a walk. Two batters later, Austin Reed walked. Deron Ricks, batting in the cleanup spot, also walked to load the bases.

Jacob Gordon followed with another walk, forcing in Mathis with the first run. Reed scored when Dylan Brazeal reached on a fielder’s choice.

Carlisle added two runs in the second. Mathis reached on a fielder’s choice and Chris Hart walked. They both scored on a single by Ricks, giving the Bison a 4-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, the Bison plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Reed led off with a single and scored on a single by Ricks, who also scored on a single by Jacob Cagle.

Carlisle scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth. Mathis singled and went to second on a balk. He scored on a double by Hart.

The Lions scored their only run in the top of the sixth. The Bison responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Gordon led off with a single and scored. Brazeal also singled and scored. Cagle and Nick Schafer both walked and scored.

Mathis got the win, striking out 10 in six innings of work. He gave up four hits in the victory.

The Bison will host the Heber Springs Panthers today at 4:30 p.m. at Rockefeller Park. The junior varsity game will be played first, followed by the varsity game.

The Panthers are coached by former Bison coach B.J. Greene.
