Carlisle High School’s Future Business Leaders of America is partnering with the City of Carlisle and the Central Arkansas Solid Waste District to host an electronic Waste Recycling Drive from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Feb. 16.

"FBLA members in groups will be knocking on each and every door asking [residents] if they have items they like to donate," FBLA sponsor Angela McCallie told Carlisle School Board members during their board meeting on Monday, Feb. 11.

McCallie said 40 FBLA members are signed up to participate in the event and they will be wearing FBLA Recycles T-shirts to identify themselves.

She said fliers have also been sent home with students about the recycling program. She said the club is asking residents to collect items ahead of time, so they are ready when the students come. That day, she said, residents may also drop off items at the old gym.

McCallie said the purpose of the drive is to gather electronics to keep them out of landfills, since they have toxic and hazardous materials that get out into the ground and water.

Once collected, she said the items, will be taken to a facility where they are taken apart and the parts are recycled and any toxic materials are deposed of properly.

Items to be collected are: computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, paper shredders, cellphones/chargers, electrical cables, game systems, DVD/VCR players and radios/stereos. Televisions and kitchen appliances are not accepted.

FBLA member/committee chair Thomas McCallie said a waste district employee would have a trailer helping collect the items.

"[It] seems like a good out of the box idea," board member C.J. Parker said.

The board approved Charles Evans, P.E. of Heber Springs, for engineering services to design asphalted parking lot on the high school campus for a total fee of $8,750.

Superintendent Jason Clark read from Evans’ letter, services include:

•Field survey to determine and establish the construction limits, then total area to be paved is known.

•Field survey to check the elevation of the existing base material to assure proper drainage.

•Prepare the necessary plans and specifications for the project. Included would be; compaction requirements for the base course and the asphalt overlay, the required hot mix formulation, conditions for laying the asphalt, layout and specification for all stripping and marking.

•Preparation of all documents required for; bid advertisement, contractor bonding (bid and performance, if required), contractor qualifications and requirements, and the contract itself.

•Conduct pre-bid and pre-construction meetings.

•All above activities scheduled so that the bidding process could be completed in the Spring of 2013 and all work performed and completed during the Summer of 2013.

The board approved Kenneth Wayne Phillips of Carlisle to mow district grounds for $17,000.

Mowing specifications, Clark said, is that grass should be cut regularly so that school campuses are always presentable and aesthetically pleasing, length of time for mowing responsibly will be from March 1, 2013 to October 31, 2013, the school will be responsible for trash pickup on lawns and weed spray, all grass will be mowed and trimmed where necessary with the exception of the practice field, football field and area under hay lease, insurance coverage by bidder preferred, mower is responsible for any damage sustained to property by mowing equipment or mowing personnel.

In other business, the board approved principal rehires of elementary school principal Susie Ward and high school principal/senior high head football coach Scott Waymire.

Clark said the students respond well to Ward and she has an open door policy. Clark said Waymire has shown he has the ability to perform both jobs. The board also approved to add $500 to both Ward’s and Waymire’s contracts for the 2012-13 school year. Clark said both deserve a raise due to their work performance and work ethic.

The board approved $50 per a night for a total of $200 plus $8.25 per hour [already given] to be paid to concession stand manager Angela McCallie during the regional basketball tournament Wednesday Feb. 20 through Saturday Feb. 23.

The next school board meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on March 11 in the administration building.
