It was a groundbreaking, of sorts, Wednesday as Jack Sullivan, project manager for Redstone Construction Group, dug post holes for the Arkansas Highway Department project office at the site of the new interchange between Interstate 40 and Arkansas Highway 89. Sullivan said drivers using Arkansas Highway 89 can expect to see construction zones and flaggers beginning next week as preparation for building the detour road around bridge construction gets under way. I-40 traffic also might be slowed as crews begin work on the span support in the median. AHTD announced Jan. 15 the award of the $7.9 million contract to Redstone Construction Group, Inc. of Little Rock to build the new Lonoke interchange; construction was delayed to await better weather in spring.
