The Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits softball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Heber Springs 4-3 in the 4A-2 conference opener March 20 at the Lonoke Ball Park.

Heber Springs scored two runs in the top of the first inning off Lonoke pitcher Charley Jo Chesney. The Lady Panthers had only five base runners the remainder of the game and only three of those made it into scoring position as Chesney struck out five in the victory.

Chesney allowed only five hits in seven innings of work.

Lonoke’s first run came in the bottom of the first. Chesney walked and scored on a double by Jarrelyn McCall.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Jackrabbits scored twice to lead 3-2. Brooke Jackson was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Two batters later, Gracie Cole walked. They both scored on a double by Jasalyn Truelove.

Lonoke pushed its lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. McCall doubled and scored on a batted ball by Jackson.

Heber Springs’ last run came in the top of the seventh.

Lonoke had six hits in the win. McCall was 2 for 3. Truelove, Haylee Whitehurst, Jessy Lewis and Kaley Dozier each had one hit.

Lonoke lost to Harding Academy earlier in the week, 4-0, at the Lonoke Ball Park.

The Lady Wildcats scored two runs in both the first and fifth innings.

Lonoke had only three hits in the game — one each by Lewis, McCall and Cole. Lonoke batters also struck out 19 times in the loss.

Chesney pitched well, allowing seven hits over seven innings of work. She also struck out seven in the loss.
