The Lonoke Banking Center 16-year-old Senior Babe Ruth baseball team beat the Pine Bluff Angels 6-4 to win the South Arkansas state championship earlier this month at the Lonoke Ball Park.

Lonoke advanced to the title game after beating the Angels in an elimination game the previous day, 9-8, as Dustyn Perkins drove in Zack Risner in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the title game, Lonoke and Pine Bluff were scoreless until the third inning when the Angles scored a run off a Lonoke error.

Lonoke responded with two runs in the fourth inning, both on stolen bases by Austin Reed and Deron Ricks.

Lonoke scored three runs in the top of the seventh to put it ahead after only having four hits for the entire game — one each by Jacob Gordon, Gage Johnson, Tristan Sullivan and Risner.

Lonoke pitcher Josh Mathis threw to four batters in the bottom of the seventh but got out of the game to secure the victory.

"They never thought they were out of it," Lonoke coach Roy Don Lewis said. "They always come up with the timely hit and they think they’re going to win every time they hit the field. It’s a good group of kids we have here."
