Lonoke County’s only movie theater, Silver Screen Cinema 8 in Cabot, is undergoing a makeover.

The theater, which opened in 1997, is having luxurious leather reclining seats installed, said owner Matt Smith.

“We have four screens done now,” Smith said in a phone interview. “Then the other four screens will have the new recliners installed. It just takes some time.”

The recliners aren’t much different from what you would find in a living room, but with some differences.

Wide and plush, the recliners are keyed by an electric switch in the armrest to lower or rise. They also have a table that swings in and out on that same armrest. Cup rests are also built into the arms of the seats as well.

Billed as the “most comfortable seat in town” the chairs were put to the test for a recent screening of the nearly three-hour long “Blade Runner 2049” and they delivered as the three hours flew by.

Smith, who owns theaters in Little Rock, Hot Springs and Searcy, said going to Cabot in 1997 was taking a little bit of a chance.

“Towns that size then,” he said, “they didn’t have theaters” but, he noted, as Cabot grew the demand for movies grew as well.

“I am extremely pleased,” he said. “’Shop Cabot First’ is something I like to say and the people of Cabot have done the same.”

In addition to the new seats, Smith said the theater also offers things like $5 tickets on Tuesday and free popcorn on Wednesday along a room available for rent to host birthday parties and such.

“That’s a real treat,” Smith said. “You have the party with the cake and ice cream and then everyone there gets to go see a movie together. It is something that people enjoy and that their kids remember.”
