Softball season ended for Lonoke last week, one win shy of reaching the Class 4A State Tournament.

Laura Park’s Lady Rabbits, fourth seed from the 2-4A, closed 14-14 after a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Harrisburg, first from the 3-4A, in the opening round of the Class 4A East Regional.

Lonoke had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game. Harrisburg delivered the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“They’re fighters and they’re competitors,” Park said of her Lady Rabbits. “They don’t give up. We could’ve very easily given up when we were down 4-0, but the girls didn’t. They stayed positive, continued to play good defense, fought back and scored more runs.

“It just was very heartbreaking because I just knew — we got a burst of energy, and we were going to find a way to win. We had great pitching, backed by some good defense, and we got some bats going. We just didn’t finish on top in the end.”

The Lady Rabbits will graduate Madison McFadden and Gracie Cole.

“They both have done a great job this year,” Park said. “Both were good in the outfield and at the plate and smart base runners. We’ll miss them next year.

“But we’ll have a lot back to build on that foundation.”

The state tournament will be this week at Lonoke.
