Lonoke’s inaugural year of soccer was a learning experience for the Jackrabbits or Lady Jackrabbits.
Doug Bost’s Jackrabbits finished 5-10-1 overall and 4-7 in conference play. They beat Bauxite, 4-1; Riverview, 2-1; Mountain View, 6-3; Conway Christian, 2-0; and Southside Batesville, 4-0; and tied Baptist Prep, 4-4.
“I was pleased,” Bost said. “We came a long way from the beginning of the year. I was pleased with the conference record. I told them after the last game I wished we could go back and play about three more games, those early conference games.
“I really believe that we would win those games now. We figured things out later in the season, where everybody was supposed to play.”
The Jackrabbits graduate keeper/midfielder Juan Arguijo, forwards Lorenzo Negrete and Mario Reyes and midfielder Kasey Brazzell.
“After the last game, I thanked them and told them that’s something they’ll always remember — that they’re the first group of seniors for the first soccer team in the history of Lonoke,” Bost said. “That’s exciting.”
He said those four seniors combined for 20 of the Jackrabbits’ 25 goals.
“We’re going to have to find some guys that can score,” he said. “But as far as defense, we’ve got those guys back.”
Negrete, the leading scorer with 16 goals, was named to the all-conference team along with junior defensive midfielder Ignacio Medina.
Mallory Jackson’s Lady Rabbits finished 2-12, including 2-2 in conference play. They had wins over Jacksonville Lighthouse, 1-0; and Jonesboro Westside, 5-4.
The inaugural roster included no seniors and just three juniors — Melissa Garcia, Grace Villalta and Mickenzie Williams.
