After the school’s best season since 2008, Coach Jonathan Buffalo and his Carlisle girls basketball team are already looking toward next year.

“We’ve been practicing, lifting weights, running, a little of everything,” Buffalo said Monday. “We try to practice three or four days a week. This week we’re only doing three because we had five last week.”

The Lady Bison spent three days at a team camp at Haskell Harmony Grove last week, going 5-2 against Kirby, Abundant Life, Harmony Grove, Malvern and Fountain Lake.

“It was good to not be beating up on each other,” Buffalo said. “It wasn’t one of those things where any one person stood out, but we had good effort offensively and defensively.”

Carlisle will participate in another team camp July 17-18 at Morrilton and another Aug. 1-3 at UALR.

“We want to use the team camps to see what we need to work on when we come back for school — what are our weaknesses?” Buffalo said.

After three days of work this week, the Lady Bison are off until July 10 for the Arkansas Activities Association’s mandated dead period.

The Lady Bison finished 28-5 last season with a quarterfinal loss to Quitman, the eventual Class 2A champion. That whets their appetite.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Buffalo said. “We’ve got a core group back from last year, and we’re looking to add some kids who didn’t get to play as much. They have an opportunity to prove themselves. I’m looking for who’s going to step up and contribute and be a big part of what we’re trying to do.”
