Lonoke’s athletic program will have a few changes for 2017-18, but all the details won’t be settled soon.

Athletic Director Marc Sherrell said he was in the process of hiring two assistant basketball coaches after girls assistant Angela Watson resigned her coaching duties and boys assistant Blain Brewington left for Nettleton, where he has been hired as assistant high school and head coach of the junior high team.

“We’re hoping to have those settled by this month’s board meeting,” Sherrell said.

The other position he is working on is a junior high football assistant following several moves starting with Taggart Moore’s hire to replace Doug Bost as head high school coach. Nick Smith moved from head junior high coach to high school offensive coordinator. Tyler Shaw moves up to head junior high coach.

Moore will continue as head boys track coach. Watson’s replacement as girls track coach will be nailed down in a few weeks, Sherrell said.

He said his first year as AD went well.

“Our spring sports seemed to excel more than our fall sports this year, but every team goes into ups and downs,” he said. “I think the football team is looking pretty good. Coach Moore has done a good job with them.”

He said the addition of cross country and boys and girls soccer last school year had gone well.

“My whole goal is to use these programs to complement each other,” Sherrell said. “I’d like to get more kids doing multiple sports.”
