Hannah Bakalekos of Sherwood won the girls division and Connor Gaunt of Cabot was co-champion of the boys division at the Burns Park Junior Invitational last week.

Storms shortened the Arkansas State Golf Association junior-designated tournament, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, so first-round scores became official.

Bakalekos shot 74 to win the girls division by a stroke over Alexis Montgomery of Maumelle.

Gaunt and Jackson Marseilles of Harrison were named co-champions of the boys tournament after both carded 70.

“They teed off (for the second round) at 8 a.m. Friday and played seven or eight holes before the big storm moved in,” Burns Park pro Joe Ralston said. “We knew it would be pretty nasty the rest of the day, so we went with the first-day scores.”

The rest of the girls results included Josie Roberson of Maumelle and Mackenzie Lee of North Little Rock, tied for third at 77; followed by Sophia Canale of Bryant, 85; Michaela Ball of Conway, 98; and Molly McClusky of Little Rock, 102.

Blaine Calhoon of Ward finished third in the boys tournament with 71. He was followed by Grayson Martin of White Hall and Caleb Miller of Cabot, 75; Hyun Je Lee of North Little Rock, 76; Josh McNulty of White Hall and Hunter Walker of Sherwood, 77; and Tucker Teague of Little Rock, Ryan Robinson of Lonoke, Jackson Hart of Searcy, Evan James of North Little Rock and Jake Malmstrom of Little Rock, 79.

Carson Stephens of Cabot won the boys 11-13 age division with 75.

South central section drive, chip and putt at Burns Park

Burns Park is expecting about 150 golfers from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas on July 12 for the South Central Section local qualifying for the 2018 national Drive, Chip and Putt championship.

Online entries will be accepted through Friday at www.drivechipandputt.com.

According to the website, the competition is a free national junior golf development competition “aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf.”

Local qualifying will be held through August at 268 sites in 50 states. The top three boys and girls from age divisions 7-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 will move on to the sub regionals in July and August at 53 sites. Burns Park qualifiers will compete in the subregional at LaFortune Park Golf Course in Tulsa on Aug. 20.

The top two finishers in each age division at the subregional will move on to regional competition in September at 10 sites. The South Central regional will be at Southern Hills in Tulsa on Sept. 16.

Regional winners in each age division will move to the overall championship at Augusta National on April 1.

“We’ve got a good place to host,” Ralston said. “They’re going to do their drives down No. 1 from our tournament side, chipping on the putting green close to that, and putting on No. 2 green. We can get the kids pretty much in one area so they can watch the others.

“We’re going to have some that are beginners and some that are very skilled. It’s great to have them all there together where they can watch and learn.”
