Basketball All Stars will check in Friday before games Saturday (girls at 1 p.m., boys at 3 p.m. in the Farris Center.
Central Arkansas Christian’s Steve Quattlebaum is making his second All-Star coaching appearance after his debut in 2006. He is an assistant for the East girls squad, joining North Little Rock’s Daryl Fimple and Wonderview’s Jeremy Simon under Jason Smith of Nettleton.
“It’s a good award because it’s chosen by coaches around the state,” Quattlebaum said Sunday. “I’ve been nominated several times, but it’s always good to win. I see it as a pretty prestigious award. I always look forward to it.”
CAC’s Christyn Williams, the country’s No. 1 recruit who is already in summer classes at the University of Connecticut, was nominated to play for the East.
“We were hoping we could work it out, but (with her schedule) she couldn’t play,” Quattlebaum said. “There are a couple of players like her who are going on to their colleges, but we’ve put together what we think is a pretty good bunch.”
His goals for the week?
“For the kids to have a good time and get to know each other,” Quattlebaum said. “Everything’s a little faster than it’s been in the past, and we won’t have as many practices and as much time to get to know each other. But it’s a good opportunity for the kids to come and compete and represent their school and to show what they can do. I think it’ll be a good game, too.”
Local athletes playing for the East girls basketball squad include Amber Hawkinson and Yomyris Morris of North Little Rock and Keiunna Walker of Lonoke.
Other locals on the all-star rosters include Blake Fairchild of Central Arkansas Christian and Nick Fakouri of Sylvan Hills, East baseball; Conner McCullough of Maumelle, West baseball; Ashlyn Spears of Cabot, Sydney Hallum of Lonoke and Cassidy Tucker of North Little Rock, East softball; Chris Cope of Cabot, assistant coach, East softball; Leo Martinez of Maumelle, West boys soccer; Chloe Lambert of CAC, West girls soccer; Maddie Brown and Kaelee Simmons of Cabot, East volleyball; and Kham Chanthaphasouk of Cabot, assistant coach, East volleyball.
The football rosters were not complete by press time.
